Three Dry Years: How Vadim Drobitko Is Adapting

For the third year in a row, Vadim Drobitko’s farm has been working under severe drought conditions. This season has been even more difficult, and the difference between fields that received some rainfall and those that did not has become especially visible.

On our way from Uzhhorod to Hungary, we talked with Vadim about what three consecutive dry seasons have taught him and how they are changing the way he looks at crop rotation and farm management.

At one point, he said something that may describe the situation better than anything else:

“Maybe this is no longer drought. Maybe this is the new normal.”

If dry seasons keep repeating, the question is no longer how to survive one difficult year. The bigger question is what has to change in the farm itself.

In this video, Vadim talks about the conclusions he has drawn after three dry years in a row and the decisions he is reconsidering for the future.

This is the first video from our trip to Hungary, where we were heading to visit Ferenc Berend, who is also facing a severe drought this year.
